Genesee's Inspiring Journey: Rebuilding Stronger After the 2020 Tornado

March 3rd, 2020 is a date that will forever be etched in Genesee’s history. On this fateful day, an EF-4 tornado struck their Mount Juliet location, leaving a trail of destruction and anguish in its wake. However, what followed is a story of true resilience, determination, and an unwavering spirit. Genesee not only survived but emerged stronger than ever.

Restructuring Amidst Chaos

One of the most astounding aspects of Genesee’s story is that, despite the sheer force of the tornado, their second-shift employees working on-site miraculously remained unharmed. This stroke of luck proved to be a pivotal cornerstone in the company’s recovery.

The tornado left the Mount Juliet location in ruins, destroying the facility and equipment that produced over 200 SKUs. But Genesee did not give in to the upheaval. With incredible resolution and innovation, Genesee implemented their contingency plan, which included a temporary structure that was rapidly produced, solely powered by generators. This impromptu move allowed the team to relocate 17 presses and maintain production. By Friday, March 6th, just three days after their world was turned upside down, they had managed to make 100 SKUs operational, demonstrating their intense commitment to the customers and industry they serve.

From Relocation to Recovery

By Sunday, March 8th, the remaining SKUs were successfully outsourced to partners. Their swift action was crucial, as Genesee’s products play a vital role in North American automotive OEM facilities. If they hadn’t recovered as quickly as they did, the consequences would have been much different.

By April 2020, Genesee had secured a new permanent location in Portland, Tennessee. This site marked the beginning of a new chapter in their journey.

Renovations and Upgrades

As they relocated, Genesee went above and beyond. They undertook significant upgrades and renovations to make their new location their home, investing nearly $2 million throughout 2020 and into 2021.

Genesee also used this challenging period as an opportunity for transformation. They embarked on a new strategic plan, focusing on partnering with their valued customers to optimize designs for weight and cost savings. Through shifting their approach, they emphasized their adaptability and progressive mindset.

Innovating for the Future

The inspiring story of Genesee’s resurgence doesn’t end here. In 2023, they filed for their first patent, once again showcasing their commitment to restructuring and enhancement. They are also in the final stages of securing UL approval for their facility, a testament to their dedication to delivering the highest standards of quality and safety.

Rebuilding Stronger

Genesee has not just rebuilt their business from the ground up after the tornado, literally and figuratively, but resurfaced as a stronger and more resilient version of themselves. Their unwavering spirit, innovation, and dedication to their customers and industry have been inspiring. Their journey is an uplifting testimony to what can be achieved when a business faces tribulation with determination and a forward-thinking mindset.
